Understanding PTSD and Complex PTSD
What Are PTSD and Complex PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) are mental health conditions that can develop after experiencing or witnessing traumatic events. While PTSD typically stems from a single traumatic incident, C-PTSD often results from prolonged or repeated trauma, such as childhood neglect, abuse, or domestic violence.
These conditions can significantly impact daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. In my practice, I provide compassionate, trauma-informed therapy to support individuals navigating PTSD and C-PTSD.
Symptoms of PTSD and C-PTSD
-
Intrusive Thoughts: Flashbacks, nightmares, and distressing memories.
-
Avoidance: Steering clear of reminders, thoughts, and emotions associated with the trauma.
-
Negative Changes in Thinking and Mood: Persistent negative beliefs, feelings of detachment, or emotional numbness.
-
Hyperarousal and Reactivity: Heightened alertness, irritability, and difficulty sleeping.
Additional Symptoms of C-PTSD:
-
Difficulty regulating emotions.
-
Negative self-concept, including feelings of shame or guilt.
-
Challenges in forming and maintaining relationships.
How Therapy Can Help
-
Develop skills to manage trauma-related symptoms and emotional dysregulation.
-
Process traumatic memories in a safe and supportive environment.
-
Rebuild a sense of trust, safety, and self-worth.
-
Improve relationships and interpersonal skills.
My Therapeutic Approach
I use a trauma-informed, integrative approach tailored to the needs of each individual, drawing from evidence-based methods such as:
-
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) – To help process traumatic memories and reduce emotional distress.
-
Mindfulness and Hypnotherapy – To foster grounding, relaxation, and present-moment awareness.
-
Attachment-Informed Psychotherapy and Counselling – To explore relational patterns and promote emotional healing.
I work with empathy and compassion while providing appropriate challenge when needed to facilitate growth and healing. I prioritise repairing therapeutic ruptures when they occur, ensuring clients feel heard and understood. Therapy is offered on a case-by-case basis, and clients must be in a stable condition to engage in trauma work. When necessary, I collaborate with GPs and psychiatrists to ensure safe, holistic care.
